Christian Aid Video Club

During the year we receive several videos. Some are an inspiring magazine–style programme of interviews, music and films from around the world. There are also feature videos with vivid stories of Christian Aid’s work helping the world’s poorest communities. It is hard hitting and heart-warming information. Whenever news breaks of emergencies around the world information is sent so we can be fully informed on the best way to help. In Burley we meet once a month to see the videos.

Theme Trade Justice

Putting Trade Justice in context

Grinding poverty and the exploitation of people in the developing world invariably raises the same question: why?

We have invited Dr Daleep Mukarji (Director of Christian Aid) to put Trade Justice in context by helping us to understand the underlying causes of poverty (e.g., history, debt, conflict, HIV/AIDS, corruption, unfair trade) and to say how this shapes the work of church agencies like Christian Aid and CAFOD. We are particularly keen to know why Trade Justice is a key campaign and how it can help to end the scandal of poverty.

2) Hearing God’s call in the market place

One fifth of the world’s population – of which we are a part – own nearly 80% of the world’s riches. Should we feel fortunate or guilty? Has scripture anything to say to us about this?

We have invited Romy Tiongco (Christian Aid’s Westside Team Leader) to share with us his own experience in the Philippines of people at the other end of the wealth scale and the injustice they live with each day. We are particularly keen to for him to explore a Western Christian response to the scandal of poverty and why we should concern ourselves with Trade Justice issues.

15 March
3) Trade rules, economics and world institutions: made simple.

Dipping our toes into Trade Justice issues can leave us feeling out of our depth. Can someone please explain, in simple terms, what we need to know?

We have invited Peter Wrigley ( Economist) and Lindsey Pearson ( Chair - Trade Injustice and Debt Action Leeds) to give us a ‘plain man‘s guide’ to the global economy and the institutions (World Trade Organisation, IMF, World bank, Quad etc.) that regulate it. We are particularly keen to understand how current trade rules are unfair and what solutions the Trade Justice Movement seeks to promote.

22 March
4) I believe in Trade Justice. Now what?

Understanding the need for Trade Justice in our world is one thing – knowing what to do following our conversion is another.

We have invited Stephen Chapman (Yorkshire Director : CAFOD) to help us understand more about the Trade Justice Movement: how it started and what campaigning has taken place so far. We would like to be convinced that campaigning does work! We would also like to know what we can do as individuals and as members of church communities.

5) What are WE going to do about it?
